(Senoia, GA – May 15, 2013) Legendary dirt track racer, Mike Head, will be appearing at Senoia Raceway this Saturday, May 18th. The former track champion at Senoia Raceway will be bringing along a pair of race cars as he will display the 1966 Chevrolet Corvair he piloted at the 3/8ths mile bull ring during the 1973 racing season and drive his two-seater late model car. The member of two racing hall of fames, Head will offer race fans the opportunity to ride with him in his late model at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour.

“It is quite the thrilling ride,” said Head. “It’s just as much fun for me to hear the person screaming with excitement as I rip around the track getting closer and closer to the concrete wall each lap.”

Head is raising money this weekend to assist his sister-in-law with the funeral expenses for his late brother Donald Head. Mike’s sibling passed away earlier this week. Donald was instrumental in Mike’s success at Senoia Raceway and other southeastern regional short tracks. The rides cost $50 per three lap ride with all proceeds assisting Donald’s widow.

“He was a good man, my brother,” explained Mike Head. “He loved this place (Senoia Raceway) and was key to why I ran so well here.”

Mike Head is a member of the National Dirt Racing Hall of Fame and the Georgia Auto Racing Hall of Fame. He won hundreds of feature events across the southeast in many different kinds of race cars. The 1966 Chevrolet Corvair that he will have on display is the car he raced at Senoia Raceway in early years of his career.

“I sold this car to Joe Lee Johnson for his son to race,” said Head. “It was Ronnie Johnson’s first race car. In fact, they painted over the #4 in my number and raced it with the #5 for Ronnie. He never changed his number to anything else.”

Race fans can sign up for the three lap rides with the hall of famer throughout the night. A registration table will be available near his Corvair display at the grandstand entrance.

“I hope we are here until 3am giving fans rides,” said Senoia Raceway promoter Tim Moses. “Help out a great racing family and get to ride with a hall of fame racer. It’s a can’t miss opportunity.”

This Saturday, May 18, Senoia Raceway will be running double features for all their weekly divisions. The Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models will run twin 20’s paying $750 to win in each. Plus, The Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bombers and Modified Mini will run only features on the twin bill.

The pits open at 5pm. Grandstands at 6pm. Hot laps crank up at 7:15pm. Racing will go green at 8pm. Grandstand ticket prices will be $12 for adults; children twelve and under are admitted for free. Pit passes are $25 for adults; children 4 through 12 are $12; three and under are admitted for free. Trackside Parking and Tailgating is also available on a limited basis and includes access to the pit area.

(Senoia, GA – May 11, 2013) Defending Newnan Bonding B Cadet points champion Thomas Mewborn of Greenville put on a clinic Saturday night at Senoia Raceway. Mewborn taught his fellow racers how to use the top groove around the 3/8ths mile to take home the hardware. Mewborn topped a strong field including Alabama’s Roger Arnett to win his main event. He and Arnett ran side by side for several laps battling for the top spot.

Joining Mewborn in victory lane were Bobby ‘Wild Child’ Arnold of Newnan winning the Mini Stock feature, Roopville’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Villa Rica’s Todd Brewster in the Modified Mini and Woody Callaway topping the vintage cars. The feature races for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models and Bombers were rained out and will be made up on May 18th.

Mewborn’s victory was by far the sweetest for everyone in attendance. He kept his car on the high side the entire race allowing Arnett to get side by side with him in the corners, but then using the momentum of the upper groove to scoot past on the straights. The feature was slowed twice for a pair of spin-outs by Alabama’s Kelly Leonard and Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter. The restarts would allow Arnett to gain a little ground, but Mewborn would slam the door shut both times.

Mewborn recorded his first win of the season ahead of Arnett. Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland was third with Kelly Leonard charging back to finish fourth ahead of Stockbridge’s Billy ‘The Kid’ Stevenson.

“This is gift for my fiance’ and family,” said Mewborn in victory lane. “We are getting married next Saturday.”

Bobby Arnold overtook McDonough’s Bailey Temples on lap six of the Mini Stock main event and then cruised to his second feature win of the season. Hampton’s Mark ‘Mad Dog’ Newton fought hard, but could only muster a runner-up spot to Arnold’s machine. Griffin’s Alex Rudolph finished third in his first race ever at Senoia. Griffin’s Bubba Hicks and Hampton’s Brandon Brock rounded out the first five.

Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran picked up his forty-fifth career feature win after rolling past Covington’s Sam ‘Bam’ Carter early on in the Summit Racing Equipment feature. Newnan’s Marcus Caswell would give the chase, but ran out of time in catching Moran. Rookie Ben Steele of Franklin ran third.

Woody Callaway returned to Senoia Raceway where he raced for years in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Callaway piloted his vintage chevy sedan modified to a victory over Perry’s Randy Woodland and his 1966 Ford Falcon. Crowd favorite Fred Herron of Newell, AL, finished third in his 1964 Ford Mustang.

“I raced here for years,” said an excited Callaway afterwards. “Then they ruined it when they put the asphalt on it. Glad to see it is back to dirt.”

Todd Brewster outlasted the field of Modified Mini. Brewster led Sharpsburg’s Robbie Scadron and Villa Rica’s Allen Brewster when they both lost power on lap seven. As Scadron and Allen Brewster slowed, fourth place runner Heath Brewster of Bremen ran into the back of them resulting in all three cars exiting to the pit area.

This Saturday, May 18, Senoia Raceway will make up the pair of rained of features for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models and Bombers. It is also the three night series opener for the Jewel Series which offers double features for all divisions. With last week’s rain outs, the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models will run a pair of 20-lap mains paying a full purse for both races. The Bombers will run two separate 15-lap main events and will also receive a full purse for both races. The Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Modified Mini will run double features with a split purse since their features were completed this past Saturday. All races will award points for the Jewel Series title, as well as, count towards the drivers season point total.

“It will be twice the racing and twice the fun for the same low ticket prices,” said promoter Tim Moses. “The Jewel Series is a lot of fun as it is just feature racing with points and money on the line. You just draw for position and race.”

(Senoia, GA – April 28, 2013) Senoia’s Joe Armistead, Jr., made his season debut at his hometown track Saturday night and did not disappoint his family and friends. The veteran late model competitor scooted past Glenn Morris early in the race and then never looked back posting his first win of the season in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model division.

Joining Armistead in victory lane were Alabama’s Kelly Leonard in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Newnan’s Marcus Caswell in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Barnesville’s Gary Parker in the Mini Stocks, Villa Rica’s Todd Brewster in the Modified Mini and Moreland’s Michael Mills in the Bombers.

A scary crash involving Bomber driver David Johnson of Griffin hushed the crowd during the final race of the night. Johnson clipped the back stretch wall coming off of turn two and then barrel rolled his race car three times down the straightaway. After several minutes, Johnson walked to the ambulance.

In the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris held the pole position after winning the qualifying heat race. Morris held the inside line as Joe Armistead, Jr. used the top lane. Armistead was able to work past Morris as they tussled side by side and then ran to the checkers. Morris would have to settle for second after a good race with LaGrange’s Tod Darda.

It took several laps for Kelly Leonard to work past Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets. Carter was running the low line until lap four when Leonard was able to work under him coming out of turn one. Leonard pulled away leaving Carter to fend off West Point’s Thomas Phillips and Newnan’s Corey Payton.

On lap seven, Payton spun on the top side of turn one. Newnan’s Johnny Stinchcomb was running the same line and could not move down the track in time to avoid the spun Payton clobbering him nearly head-on. Neither driver was injured in the crash.

Phillips continued to pursue Carter for the second place position, but Carter would pinch off Phillips with blocking moves to both sides. Phillips looked to have created a break in the armor on lap eleven, but spun in turn four breaking a rear shock.

Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland was able to get past Carter on lap 14 when Carter bobbled in the second turn, but Kirkland could not track down Leonard as the Alabama hot shoe won for the first time this season at Senoia Raceway. Carter finished third ahead of rookie points leader Billy ‘The Kid’ Stevenson and Jason Miller.

“I love this track,” shouted Kelly Leonard in victory lane. “The owners really care about the drivers and the fans are the best in the world.”

Marcus Caswell held off all challenges in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks. First Tyrone’s Jamie Simmons tried valiantly to overtake the veteran Caswell and then LaGrange’s Jake Traylor took his best shot. Caswell calmly kept them at bay to win his first of the season. Traylor ended up second ahead of Covington’s Sam ‘Bam’ Carter.

Gary Parker battled side by side for the lead with Hampton’s Mark ‘Mad Dog’ Newton for several laps of the Mini Stock feature. Parker was able to wrestle away the lead for good on lap eleven to win for the second time this season. The previous week’s winner, Bobby ‘Wild Child’ Arnold of Newnan, finished third ahead of Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson and LaGrange’s Jeremy Stokley.

Todd Brewster finally completed all the laps to win the Modified Mini feature. Brewster had been leading the main event for the modified four cylinder class the past two weekends only to develop problems and dropping from the race. Brewster said the car was running hot again, but not enough to drop and give up the checkered flag.

Michael Mills continued his team’s domination in the Bomber division. Mills and teammate Jay Conner have won all four features this season while swapping time behind the wheel. Newnan’s Michael Nelms finished second ahead of Riverdale’s Mike Ray which also completed the trifecta for drivers named Michael.

This Saturday, May 4, Senoia Raceway will welcome the National Vintage Racing Association to the 3/8ths mile bullring. Restored race cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s will compete in heats and features along with the six weekly divisions of Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bombers and Modified Mini. The Bombers will compete in a special feature with some extra prize money on the line.

Senoia Raceway is located just five miles west of Senoia, GA on Georgia Highway 16. Easy access from both Interstate 85 or Interstate 75.
